II_WORK (Temporary Work Files) Location Guidelines
If your system will run a significant number of queries involving large amounts of data, or will be using the usermod command or MODIFY statement, then you will need a lot of reading and writing bandwidth in the work location.
If you lose this location, replace the failed component, rebuild the directory structure, and restart Actian X. No files need to be recovered.
If you fill this file system, Actian X will usually recover automatically as the query fails and the offending work file is removed.
For more information about temporary files and sorting, see Space Requirements for Sorts on page 9 in the Database Administrator Guide.
II_WORK is also used when restructuring a table through the usermod command or the MODIFY statement. (See Space Requirements for Modify Operations on page 7.) Allow sufficient free space for at least twice the size of the largest table. Busy sites can optionally enable multiple work locations to provide sufficient storage and improve disk I/O for temporary sort files.
Note:  We recommend that you put work locations on scratch disks so that sorting activity does not contend with other database I/O, and data disks do not become excessively fragmented.
