--- description: Undo the semantic-layer and AI Analyst changes Steward made in a session, from one message onward or for the whole session, and edit an earlier message --- # Rolling back Steward changes You can undo the changes Steward made in a session from the Steward chat: from a specific message onward, for the whole session, or by editing an earlier message and choosing whether to undo what came after it. Rollback covers the semantic-layer changes Steward made (models, including their dimensions, measures, filters and relationships, as well as metrics and glossary terms) and the AI Analysts it created or changed. !!! info "Availability" - **Who can do this:** members with the **Edit** capability in the active Workspace. Members without it don't see the rollback controls. !!! warning "Rollback can't be undone" Rolling back removes the selected message and everything after it from the conversation. You can't bring the conversation back afterwards. ## Roll back from a message Use this to undo what Steward did in response to one of your messages and everything it did after that. 1. In the Steward chat, hover over the message you sent. 2. Click the undo icon to the left of the message (**Roll back the Steward's changes from this point**). The icon appears only on messages where Steward made changes. 3. In **Rollback to this message?**, click **Rollback**. Steward undoes the changes it made in response to that message and to every later message, including changes to AI Analysts. The message and everything after it are removed from the conversation. ## Roll back the whole session 1. In the Steward chat header, click the undo icon (**Rollback all changes**). The icon appears only after Steward has made at least one change in the session. 2. In **Roll back the entire conversation?**, click **Roll back all**. Steward undoes every semantic-layer and AI Analyst change it made in the session, and the conversation is cleared. ## Edit an earlier message You can change something you asked earlier and send it again. 1. Click a message you sent. When you hover over it, **Click to edit message** replaces its timestamp. 2. Edit the text. Press **Enter** to submit, **Shift+Enter** for a new line, or **Esc** to cancel. 3. If Steward made changes from that message onward, **Submit from a previous message?** appears. Choose: - **Revert**: undo Steward's changes from that message onward, the same way as rolling back from a message. - **Don't revert**: keep the changes. - **Cancel**: go back without submitting. Whether or not you revert, the original message and everything after it are removed from the conversation, and your edited message is sent as a new message. If you edit your most recent message and Steward made no changes in response to it, the message is sent again straight away, without asking. You can't edit a message while Steward is still responding. Wait for it to finish, or stop it first. ## What rollback does | Change Steward made | After rollback | | --- | --- | | Changed a model, metric or glossary term | Restored to the version it had before Steward's change. | | Created a model, metric or glossary term | Deleted. | | Deleted a model, metric or glossary term | Restored. | | Changed an AI Analyst | Restored to the version it had before Steward first changed it in the rolled-back part of the session. | | Created an AI Analyst | Deleted. | Rollback doesn't erase history. When it restores an earlier version of a model, metric or glossary term, the restore is saved as a new version, so the versions in between stay in that entity's version history. An entity that Steward created is deleted rather than versioned. When the rollback finishes, **Rollback complete** appears with the number of changes reverted, for example **Reverted 3 changes**. Semantic-layer changes are undone in the background, so Studio pages may take a moment to show the restored versions. AI Analyst changes are undone one by one. If some can't be undone, a warning such as **1 analyst change couldn't be reverted** appears, and the other changes are still rolled back. Running a rollback again on changes that were already undone does nothing. !!! warning "Rollback overwrites later manual edits" Rollback restores each entity to the version it had before Steward changed it. If someone edited the same model, metric or glossary term by hand after Steward's change, rolling back replaces that manual edit too. The manual edit stays in the entity's version history, so you can restore it from there. ## Rollback or version history? | Use | When | | --- | --- | | Rollback in the Steward chat | You want to undo what Steward did in a session, across every entity it touched, in one step. | | **Version history** on a model, metric, glossary term or AI Analyst | You want to restore one entity to a specific earlier version, whoever made the change. **Restore** saves a new version that matches the one you pick, and the current version stays in the history. | ## Troubleshooting **I don't see the rollback icons.** You need the **Edit** capability in the active Workspace. The per-message icon also appears only on messages where Steward made changes, and the header icon only once the session has changes. **A Studio page still shows the old content after a rollback.** Semantic-layer changes are undone in the background. Wait a moment and reopen the page.
