The pipe ( | ) is the alternation metacharacter used in regular expressions. r1|r2 matches either r1 or r2 where r1 and r2 are regular expressions.
Example
/Banks?|Institutions?/ will match a line with any of the strings "Bank", "Banks", "Institution", "Institutions". The ? metacharacter matches zero or one of the character preceding it.
