This built-in variable can be set to any value from 0 to 32 (inclusive) and that size will be used for tab expansion. If it is set to 0, no tab expansion will take place and the tab character (hex value 09) will appear in the data. TABS is defaulted to a tab expansion of 8 if it is not explicitly set in the script.
