Extend Database Dialog
The Extend Database dialog lets you set options for extending the database, work, or auxiliary work locations for an existing database. You can specify an existing location, or create a new location. This dialog contains the following pages:
General
Output Log
These pages are described in the following sections.
For more information, see Create a Location and Extend a Database.
General Page
This page lets you set the following options:
Database Name
Displays the name of the database to extend. The default entry is the database currently selected in the Instance Explorer.
Effective User
Specifies the effective user name for the session. Valid only for a privileged user, DBA, or sessions that have the db_admin database privilege.
Some commands, including Backup Database (see Backup Database Dialog), Restore Database (see Restore Database Dialog), Verify Database (see Verify Database Dialog), Create Database (see General Page (New Database)), and Delete Database (see Delete Database Dialog), restrict the use of the effective user option to privileged users.
Note:  This option does not assume the group of the effective user.
Location Type
Specifies whether to use an existing location or create a new location for the extension.
Use Existing
If you use an existing location, it must have already been created. For more information, see Create a Location.
Use New
If you choose to create a new location, you must specify the location name and disk area.
Default: Use Existing
Name
Specifies the name to be assigned to the disk and directory combination.
If you selected an existing location, select it from the Name drop-down.
If you are creating a new location, specify the name to be assigned to the disk and directory combination. Must be a valid object name (see Object Naming Rules).
Area
Specifies the disk path for the location.
If you selected an existing location, the disk location for the selection is displayed.
If you are creating a new location, specify the disk and directory location to which the location is to be mapped. Must be a valid operating system specification. You can specify this area using a quoted string or an unquoted string that does not include special (non-alphanumeric) characters other than “/”. The path name must not exceed 126 characters.
Usage
Specifies the usage type of the extension location: Database, Work, or Auxiliary Work.
If you selected a new or existing location, supported usage types are displayed. Work and Auxiliary Work locations are mutually exclusive.
Output Log Page
The Output Log page displays the output of the extension process based on the options you have selected on the General dialog page.
