Upgrading to Ingres 10S on OpenVMS
Ingres 10S for OpenVMS is available for the OpenVMS Itanium platform only. Ingres 10S for OpenVMS introduces internal functionality changes, incorporating the use of 64-bit operating system functions and Posix Threads. As a result, Ingres 10S for OpenVMS is binary incompatible with all earlier Ingres releases on the OpenVMS platform. If upgrading to Ingres 10s from a prior release on OpenVMS then a fresh installation and manual database transfer is necessary.
Considerations when upgrading to Ingres 10S on OpenVMS include the following:
Ingres 10S must be installed as a new installation and not into an existing Ingres environment.
Existing Ingres databases can be transferred to Ingres 10S using the copydb command to unload the existing table schema and data in Character-Format from the existing Ingres release and reload into Ingres 10S.
All character and reporting based applications, embedded SQL 3GL applications, and OpenAPI applications must be rebuilt from the application source files.
Alternatively, Ingres Net can be used to connect existing character and reporting, embedded SQL 3GL, and OpenAPI applications running in a previous Ingres release environment to an Ingres 10S database environment.
Checkpoints, journals, and dump files from previous Ingres releases cannot be used with Ingres 10S.
