Hardware versus Software RAID
In principle, both hardware and software RAIDs can be used. Software RAID is the more flexible option because hardware RAID performance for a single volume is limited by the capabilities of a single RAID controller. The highest performance I/O subsystems for Vector have been created by using multiple high-end (PCIe) disk controllers (not necessarily RAID controllers), and uniting all disks in a software RAID volume, typically in RAID5.
