Installing AuditMaster
Instructions for First-Time or Upgrade Installation
The following topics explain how to install AuditMaster either as an upgrade of an existing release or for the first time.
Before You Begin
We recommend you be familiar with the following before installing or upgrading AuditMaster:
Preparing to Install AuditMaster for system requirements and platform-specific notes.
These topics provide additional preinstallation information:
Installation Notes
Be aware of the following conditions before installing AuditMaster on any platform.
If you are installing the AuditMaster Viewer client to access a PSQL server in which security is enabled and security policy is set to either Mixed or Database, see Running AuditMaster under PSQL Security. Prepare to set up AuditMaster in a PSQL security environment by first familiarizing yourself with the security information in the PSQL Advanced Operations Guide. Note that for installation with database security enabled, you must select the Prompt for Client Credentials setting in PSQL Control Center (PCC) in the Properties > Access window for the PSQL engine.
On 32-bit systems, PSQL_vnn_AuditMaster_x86_Install.log
On 64-bit systems, PSQL_vnn_AuditMaster_x64_Install.log
Hidden Administrative Share
When you install AuditMaster on PSQL Server, the default installation settings create a hidden administrative share to AuditMaster components in their 32-bit installation folder. By default, the share name is PVSWAUDIT$ for the path C:\Program Files (x86)\Actian\PSQL\Audit, but both the share name and installation location can be set to other values during installation, and the share need not be hidden. In using the share, you may need to consider the following things:
Upgrade Notes
If you are upgrading from a previous AuditMaster version, you can carry forward audit records and settings to continue using your existing audit records and AuditMaster configuration settings.
Upgrading from AuditMaster 8.10 or 7
If you upgrade from AuditMaster 8.10 or 7, use these steps to save records and settings for continued use:
1
2
In Control Panel > Programs and Features, uninstall AuditMaster. When you see the following prompt, select Yes to completely remove the program:
Do you want uninstall to clean up Pervasive AuditMaster data and configuration settings?
This step is especially important for AuditMaster 7, since selecting No installs the AuditMaster upgrade in the original AuditMaster 7 location, where the default was C:\Program Files\Pervasive Software\PSQL\Audit instead of the new location C:\Program Files (x86)\Actian\PSQL\Audit. Selecting Yes enables installation in the proper location because no previous installation is detected.
3
Install AuditMaster using the steps under Installing AuditMaster. Be sure to use the same share name that was used in the installation of the previous AuditMaster version.
4
Copy the four folders you saved in step 1 above to the new AuditMaster share location, overwriting existing folders and their contents. The 32-bit share location is C:\Program Files\Actian\PSQL\Audit and 64-bit is C:\Program Files (x86)\Actian\PSQL\Audit.
5
Upgrading from AuditMaster 12 and Later
When you upgrade from AuditMaster 12 or a later version, the installer automatically carries forward records and settings for use in the next version of the product without any manual steps.
Installing AuditMaster
You can install AuditMaster in two ways:
An AuditMaster license authorizes one server installation, but you may install as many viewer clients as needed across your network environment. For instructions, see Installing AuditMaster Viewer as a Client.
You must run the AuditMaster installer on the system where you are installing it. You cannot run the installer remotely.
1
2
The installer prepares and opens the installation wizard and displays the Welcome page.
3
When the installer is ready, the Next button becomes active. Click it to continue.
4
For the License Agreement, accept the Software License Agreement and click Next.
5
For the License Key, enter an AuditMaster license key and click Next. If you enter no key, your trial period starts now. Without a license, you can audit for the trial period. After that, auditing ends, but you can still query any logged audit records. For more information, see Authorization License.
6
For the Installation Folder, if needed you can change the default AuditMaster installation locations. On a 64-bit system both the 32- and 64-bit components must be on the same system where the PSQL server runs and must be installed to different locations.
On the server we recommend at least 200 MB of free space for storing audit records.
Click Next to enter the final installation setting.
7
For the Share Name, the installer asks for a share name to assign to the installation directory path. Accept the default share name PVSWAUDIT$ or enter an alternate share name, and click Next.
8
The installer is now ready to install the program. You can click Back to change settings or click Install to continue.
9
The next task is to set up data monitoring, as described in Working with Audit Configurations.
Installing AuditMaster Viewer as a Client
AuditMaster automatically installs a viewer client when installed on a PSQL server. You may also install the viewer on systems with PSQL clients, from which you can connect to AuditMaster on the server as a remote client to view its audit records.
PSQL Client must be already installed and configured on the system where you install the AuditMaster Viewer client.

For the License Agreement, accept the license and click Next.
5
For the Installation Folder, if needed you can change the default AuditMaster installation locations.
Click Next.

2
3
In the Locate 'amserver' on Your AuditMaster Server dialog, enter the path to the file amserver on the AuditMaster server.
The default path is \\server\PVSWAUDIT$\DATA\amserver, where server is the name of the PSQL system. Note that a share name other than PVSWAUDIT$ may have been set.
4
Select the file amserver and click Open to add the server to the list.
5
Right-click the server configuration and select Login. You may also double-click it.
6
The Viewer client is now ready to use.
Note AuditMaster has a built-in, internal user ID called admin with the default password MASTER. The password is case-sensitive, but the user name is not. For security reasons, we recommend that you consider changing this password. Note that AuditMaster user accounts are internal-only and unrelated to network, local, or database user logins. For remote client access to a PSQL system with security policy set to either Mixed or Database, follow the instructions under Running AuditMaster under PSQL Security.
Common Questions After Installing AuditMaster
The following items contain answers to question you may have after running the installation program.
Where are the AuditMaster release notes?
The readme_am.htm file is available in three places:
Do I have to configure anything in PSQL Control Center (PCC) for AuditMaster?
No. AuditMaster requires no special settings in PCC.
Does the AuditMaster installation create any log files?
On 32-bit systems, PSQL_vnn_AuditMaster_x86_Install.log
On 64-bit systems, PSQL_vnn_AuditMaster_x64_Install.log
Does an upgrade retain AuditMaster data and settings?
Yes, so long as you follow the instructions under Upgrade Notes.
Removing AuditMaster
Uninstalling AuditMaster removes its components in the folder <installation directory>\Audit. Files in other locations are untouched.
Note AuditMaster removal stops and restarts PSQL services. Choose a convenient time in keeping with your database policies and practices.
AuditMaster v12 can be removed in the normal way from the Control Panel. It is listed as Actian AuditMaster.
If you plan to reinstall AuditMaster v12 and would like to continue using the existing audit data and configuration settings, follow these steps:
