When Director starts, the Instance Explorer remembers and displays all the instances connected during the last session, displaying them in either a connected or “ghosted” (grayed-out) condition.

Depending on your reconnection settings (see Environment Options (Options Dialog)), you can specify whether no instances are reconnected when you restart, only local instances are reconnected, or all instances are reconnected. For more information, see Set Connection and Startup Options.
