Format of Installation Names
Installation names used in the Connect dialog for an Actian database installation have the following general format:
ServerName/InstallationCode or ServerName:PortNumber
For example, a server with the computer name XY12345 and an installation with installation code II would be named XY12345/II. Another example is EU2054:II.
For more information, see
Instance Code.
If only one installation is available on the same machine as your Director client, you may specify the Ingres installation name using the name of this local machine, the word “local” or “localhost”, or by the installation code only. In cases where more than one installation is present on the local machine, using “local/XX,” “local:XX,” or just “XX” (where “XX” is the installation code) will work. For installations on a remote machine, the fully qualified installation name (server name and installation code) must be used to identify each installation.
Using the second form (
ServerName:
PortNumber), the port value must be a number corresponding to the port where the management server is listening. For an instance ID of “II”, the port value is 37455; for a “VW” instance, the port number would be 44223. To translate between instance IDs and port numbers, see
Translating Between Instance IDs and Port Values.
Using either of these forms, if the instance cannot be contacted, an appropriate error message is displayed, and you will be given a chance to change the information and retry.
Note for network administrators: Using the ServerName/InstallationCode form requires Director to access the Ingres “Discovery” server on the given server at port 16902. Thus this port must be open to outside connections. For the ServerName:PortNumber form, however, this Discovery port need not be accessible, thus simplifying your network configuration. Both forms, of course, require the applicable management server port on the given server machine (the PortNumber in the second form) to be open and accessible to the Director client.
For more information about port 16902, see
