Generate Statistics
To generate statistics for table columns and optimize a database, the Instance Explorer must be
connected to the installation that contains the database (see
Connect to an Actian Database Instance).
To generate database statistics
1. In the Instance Explorer, right-click the database node and select DBA Utilities, Generate Statistics from the context menu.
1. Select the effective user.
This is the effective user name for the session. Valid only for a privileged user, DBA, or sessions that have the db_admin database permission.
2. Choose whether you want to generate statistics only on key and indexed columns.
3. Select whether you want to include all tables or specific tables, or exclude particular tables. Click the Tables button to select or exclude specific tables.
4. If you specified particular tables, choose whether you want to include statistics on all columns or particular columns. Click the Columns button to select specific columns.
5. Choose whether you want to include all indexes or particular indexes. Click the Indexes button to select specific indexes.
6. Choose whether you want to generate statistics on a subset (sample) of data. If so, specify whether:
• Tuple identifiers should be sorted before the rows are retrieved
• To use an algorithm to estimate the number of distinct values for columns whose histograms are built with sampling
• To specify the percentage of table rows to sample for the data set
7. Specify whether you want column information printed in verbose mode.
1. Click the Options link in the “Select a page” portlet of the dialog.
The Options page is displayed.
2. Specify any desired options.
1. Click the Display Formatting link in the “Select a page” portlet of the dialog.
The Display Formatting page is displayed.
2. Set any desired character formatting options.
3. Set any desired integer formatting options.
4. Set any desired float formatting options.
Set options on the Input/Output Files page (see Input/Output Files (Generate Statistics Dialog)): 1. Click the Input/Output Files link in the “Select a page” portlet of the dialog.
The Input/Output Files page is displayed.
2. Specify a statistics input file name and options, if desired.
3. If desired, specify a statistics output file name and select whether you want to generate cell values in hexadecimal format.
Generate statistics:
1. Click OK.
The Output Log page is displayed, and statistics are shown on the text page.
2. Click Close to close the dialog.
