Artifacts

An Artifact is a chart, table or report that the AI Analyst creates in a conversation. When you save one, it goes to your Artifacts library in Explorer, where you can open it again, rename it, star it, archive it and share it. Saved charts and tables that have a re-runnable query re-run it each time you open them from the library.

Availability

  • Who can do this: members with the Chat capability in the active Workspace. Only an artifact's owner can save, rename, archive, restore or share it.

What's an Artifact?

When the AI Analyst answers a question, it creates named charts, tables and reports and shows them in the conversation. Every successful query produces at least a table. These outputs start unsaved: they live only in that conversation. Saving one adds it to your Artifacts library.

There are three types of artifact:

Type What it is
Chart A visualization produced by the AI Analyst
Table A table of query results produced by the AI Analyst
Report A structured document with headings, text, stat cards, charts and tables. See Reports

Artifacts belong to a Workspace. You only see the artifacts of the Workspace you are working in.

Viewing a chart or table in a conversation

In a conversation, charts and tables appear as preview cards. Click a card to open it in the side panel beside the conversation. On a wide window you can drag the panel's edge to resize it; on a narrow window it opens as a sheet over the conversation.

The side panel has up to three tabs:

  • Chart (charts only): the visualization.
  • Data: the rows behind the chart or table.
  • Calculation: the query that produced the result. See Understanding the calculation.

The footer shows the number of rows or data points and the export actions for the current tab. See Exporting.

Saving an artifact

To save a chart or table:

  1. Click its card in the conversation to open it in the side panel.
  2. At the bottom of the panel, click Save. The button changes to Saved.

To save a report: click the bookmark icon (Save artifact) in the side panel header. Click it again (Remove from saved artifacts) to archive the report. Charts and tables embedded in a report have the same bookmark icon. See Saving a report.

Only the owner of the conversation can save its artifacts. If someone shared a conversation with you, you don't see the save actions.

The Artifacts library

Click Artifacts in the Explorer sidebar to open the library.

The Artifacts page has three tabs:

Tab What it shows
My artifacts Artifacts you saved and haven't archived
Shared with me Saved artifacts that other people shared with you by name, or with Anyone in this organization
Archived Your own archived artifacts

On each tab you can:

  • filter by type with the Artifact type dropdown (All, Charts, Tables, Reports),
  • show only the artifacts you starred with Starred,
  • search by title with Search artifacts… (not case-sensitive).

Artifacts are listed newest first. The library shows the 50 newest matching artifacts. To find older ones, use search or the filters.

To act on a single artifact, open its More actions menu to Star or Archive it (or Restore it on the Archived tab). Click an artifact to open it. On the Shared with me tab you can only star artifacts. Only the owner can archive them.

Archiving several artifacts at once

On the My artifacts tab:

  1. Hover over an artifact and click the circle in its top-left corner (Select artifact). Repeat for each artifact you want to archive.
  2. Click Archive selected.

Only your own artifacts are archived. Click Clear to cancel the selection.

Opening a saved artifact

Click an artifact in the library to open its page. The header shows the title, the date it was saved, and these actions:

Action What it does
Title Click the title to rename the artifact (owner only)
Open conversation Opens the conversation that produced the artifact. Shown only when the owner turned on the link back to the conversation when sharing
Archive / Restore Archives the artifact after you confirm, or restores an archived one
Star / Unstar Marks the artifact for the Starred filter
Share Opens the Share artifact dialog

A saved chart or table has the same Chart, Data and Calculation tabs as the side panel. The Calculation tab appears only when the artifact has a query that can be re-run. A saved report opens as the full report. See Reports.

Live data

Saved charts and tables that have a re-runnable query aren't snapshots. Each time you open one from your Artifacts library, its query re-runs and the page shows a Live data badge. Opening a chart or table from its card in a conversation shows the stored results and doesn't re-run the query. The stored SemQL is compiled again against your current semantic layer, so changes to Models and Metrics are picked up. Results refresh on each view, subject to your data source's cache settings.

If a live refresh isn't available, for example because the query no longer compiles, fails or times out, the page shows the last saved snapshot with the notice Showing the last saved snapshot — a live refresh isn't available right now. When the problem happened while running against the data source, members with the Edit capability also see Open data source, which opens that connection in Studio.

A chart or table that has no Calculation tab has no query to re-run, so it always shows its saved results. On an archived artifact, the Live data badge isn't shown and the page displays This artifact is archived. Restore it to keep it up to date.

Reports don't re-run as a whole. Charts and tables inside a report show the results from when each chart or table was created, even though they carry a Live marker. To get current numbers, open the saved chart or table on its own.

Understanding the calculation

The Calculation tab shows how the result was computed, as a flow of steps joined by compile. On a saved artifact's page, the tab notes that the query re-runs each time you open the artifact. The steps are:

  1. Metric or Model: a summary of what was asked, for results based on a Metric or a Model query. It can list the Model, Dimensions, Measures, Filters, Where, Time grain, Order, Limit, Group by, Having and Distinct.
  2. SemQL (or Custom SemQL when the AI Analyst wrote the SemQL directly): the semantic query.
  3. SQL: the executable SQL sent to your data source, when it is available.

Use Copy SemQL or Copy SQL to copy a step. Members with Studio access, for example those with the Edit capability, can click Metric and Model names to open them in Studio.

For more on SemQL, see SemQL. For how the AI Analyst arrives at an answer, see How answers are built.

Exporting

Where Action Result
Chart tab Download PNG Downloads the chart as an image
Chart tab Copy PNG Copies the chart image to your clipboard
Data tab (charts and tables) Download CSV Downloads the rows as a CSV file

If a chart can't be drawn, it is shown as a table and the PNG actions aren't offered.

Row limits

AI Analyst queries return 100 rows by default and at most 1,000 rows, and an artifact holds at most 1,000 rows. When a result was cut off, the table shows Showing the first N rows — the result was truncated. A CSV export contains only the rows in the artifact. If you need more detail, ask the AI Analyst to aggregate or filter the data.

Renaming, starring and archiving

  • Rename: on the artifact's page, click the title (Artifact title), type the new name and click away. Only the owner can rename.
  • Star: click Star on the artifact's page, or choose Star from More actions in the library. Turn on Starred in the library to see only starred artifacts. Stars are personal: other people don't see them, and starring doesn't change the order of the list.
  • Archive: click Archive on the artifact's page and confirm (Archive this artifact? You can restore it later.), or choose Archive from More actions. Archived artifacts move to the Archived tab. You can't delete an artifact from the library. Archive it instead, and restore it later if you need it.
  • Restore: on the Archived tab, choose Restore from More actions, or open the artifact and click Restore.

Sharing an artifact

Artifacts are private by default. If you own an artifact, click Share on its page (or the share icon in the side panel header) to open the Share artifact dialog. You can choose Only me, Anyone in this organization or Specific people, and turn on Show a link back to the source conversation so viewers can open the conversation. Anyone in this organization covers every member of this Workspace. Specific people must have access to the Workspace. Save the artifact before you share it. Only saved artifacts appear on the recipient's Shared with me tab.

Shared charts and tables show live data

When someone opens a chart or table you shared, its query runs again and they see current results, even if their own access wouldn't include that data. Think about who should see the data before you share.

See Sharing for details.

How charts look

Charts use your organization's chart theme: a series color palette and, optionally, a typeface and axis and grid styling. The chart theme is an organization setting. Members with the Manage organization capability change it in Settings → Charts. To ask for a particular kind of chart, see Requesting charts.
