Catalog Connections

Connect an enterprise data catalog and Actian AI Analyst copies its business terms, with their definitions and synonyms, into your Glossary, so you don't have to write every term by hand.

Availability

  • Who can do this: members with the Edit capability in the active Workspace. If your organization turned on Restrict connection management, only Admins (members with the Manage organization capability) can add, edit or sync catalog connections.
  • Deployment: Actian SaaS and self-managed deployments. AI Analyst must be able to reach your catalog over the network.

What is a catalog connection?

A catalog connection links AI Analyst to an external data catalog and syncs its business terms on a regular schedule, so your AI Analysts use the definitions your data governance team maintains. It only reads from the catalog. Nothing is written back.

It's different from a data source connection, which connects to a database or warehouse so AI Analyst can query it. A catalog connection doesn't query your data; it imports business terminology.

How it works

  1. You connect to your catalog with its base URL and an API secret.
  2. AI Analyst pulls business terms (name, definition, synonyms and a link back to the catalog) on a schedule, hourly by default. You can also click Sync now to update your current Workspace right away.
  3. Synced terms appear in your Glossary alongside any terms you created by hand, marked with a Catalog source.
  4. Your AI Analysts use those terms according to each Analyst's glossary settings.

A catalog connection belongs to the whole organization. Scheduled syncs add the terms to the Glossary of every Workspace. Sync now updates only the Workspace you're in.
